Design Star: The Final Two
Posted by Dan September 7th, 2007 at 11:32am In Reality
Last Sunday’s Design Star saw the elimination of good-natured, jovial Will in an episode where the last three contestants were flown to different parts of the country to redesign rooms for different families in need. Basically, it was Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on an HGTV budget.
The families included those of a mine worker from West Virginia, a wheelchair-bound girl in California and husband and wife firefighters in Indiana. Despite having probably the most aesthetically pleasing room, Will got the boot due to his struggle with hosting duties. Like the goodwill donation of baby clothes, it was sad but necessary.
The final two contestants standing are a bit of a surprise: shirtless Todd and hairdresser Kim (pictured — isn’t she cute?). Despite (because of?) Todd’s constant state of undress and his manic, loud-is-the-new-likable hosting style, I’m definitely pulling for Kim. She’s got an easygoing demeanor, she’s the best (by a mile) in front of the camera and she peppers her presentations with little helpful hints so viewers can spruce up their own homes.
I’ll leave it at that, because I don’t really think that anyone else watches this show. Unless you’re specifically Googling Design Star.

HGTV Design Star Indiscretion?
Is Kim Myles ineligible to participate in Design Star? That is the question many are asking concerning this Final 2 contestant. Has something improper occurred or is it just a coincidence? You be the judge.
It was recently discovered that Design Star contestant Kim Myles is a personal friend of James Patrick Herman, Senior Entertainment Editor of InStyle magazine. Herman revealed on the InStyle blog, on July 20, 2007, http://partyhopper.instyle.com/2007/07/americas-next-t.html
“Kim is my friend and neighbor, …..She’s also my hairdresser, by the way….”
In this article, he references an earlier article mentioning Myles from November 2006, which suggests they were friends long before the taping began of Design Star Season 2.
Why is this important? According to the Eligibility Rules for participating in Design Star,
“…any applicant closely acquainted with any person connected with the production or administration or exhibition of the Program is not eligible…”
Every Design Star viewer knows that Martha McCully, one of the judges on the Design Star panel, is also an editor for InStyle, and that at least one of the prizes was provided by InStyle magazine. All of this suggests that Kim Myles may be ineligible to compete in Design Star.
Herman goes further by stating, “And, of course, I’d recommend rooting for Kim on Design Star!” No other contestant has been singled out in this manner or had the benefit of a recommendation from the official InStyle website.
Has an impropriety occurred? It begs these questions:
“Did Kim reveal to HGTV/Scripps Network her personal relationship with Herman?”
“Was Kim accepted as a contestant on Design Star because of her personal relationship with an InStyle senior editor?”
“Was Kim swept to the final 2 because of her personal relationship with the InStyle senior editor?”
What do you think?

I think that artistic competitions are notorious for this kind of favoritism. Stefan should be commended for making people aware of it.

Ummm… I’m kind of okay with it.

A serious injustice has occured here.
According to the HGTV DESIGN STAR CONTESTANT RULES, Kim should not have been allowed to enter the contest. Once HGTV discovered her relationship with one of the Sponsors, they had a duty to eliminate Kim IMMEDIATELY!
Because Kim was allowed to remain in the contest, sadly, Will Smith (one of everyone’s favorite contestants) didn’t have an opportunity to be in the final 2. So Will was actually cheated.
If HGTV followed it’s own rules, Will Smith would probably be the next DESIGN STAR. I would expect someone to take legal action.
Very Bad for HGTV.

The ship has sailed.
What are they going to do, bring everybody back & re-shoot all the episodes? Maybe they planned it all along. It’s been out in the open since what, November? Controversy, conspiracy to cultivate a buzz?
Whatever. Will didn’t carry himself like Kim does. She obviously has more appeal as a host than him. Since she wasn’t prohibited from participating, Will’s shortcomings are too apparent now.
She’s probably going to win.

It is not right that she is a contestant. I think they should replace Kim with Will tonight and then Will should win. He can learn hosting anytime. Clive could help him.

Right or wrong…..she is the most talented and personable of the group. Loved the room she did in Hawaii.
Will was good. Personality…not so much.

I was expecting the perfect result from the show at the beginning, however, as it went on, I was let down with Robb and Will gone but Kim remaining instead. Honestly i didn’t know anything about her relationship with the judge. But my sense told me that something must be wrong, as it was so apparent that Kim is not talent enough to remain until the last eight, but she made it. I predicted that she would make it to be the winner, so she did, too. Obviously, this show was ruined by the unjustice or something even worse. I had hoped so eagerly for the truth in America, but my dream broke here . I came from a country where there is no justice nor truth.

InStyle is part of TimeWarner (where I’m sure there are as many “Editors” as there are Vice Presidents at a bank). HGTV is Scripps. I would find it hard to believe Mr. Herman would have the power to rig the show…
