TV Blogs Go Dark in Solidarity with the Writers Guild of America

blogger_strike_sign.jpgOn November 13th, this blog and the blogs listed below will be on strike for the day in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. As fellow writers and as TV fans, we are coming together to express our strong support for the writers and their goals. We believe that when a writer’s work makes money for a company, that writer deserves to be paid.

Many writers depend on residuals for a stable income, and that income shouldn’t be based on an outdated formula which ignores the existence of new media and all but a tiny percentage of DVD sales. The talented writers responsible for so much of what we love about television should and must be paid fairly and equitably, and we will stand with them until they reach that goal. For everyone’s sake, and for the sake of television, we hope both sides can come to an agreement quickly.

To further that goal, we are calling on our readers to sign this petition and to contact the following television networks, voicing support for the writers and for a return to the negotiating table:

ABC

Burbank, CA 91521

FOX

.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

CBS

Los Angeles, CA 90036

NBC / Universal

Universal City, CA 91608

After the blackout, we intend to continue our campaign to support the WGA until the dispute has been resolved fairly. Since we will not be posting any new content on the 13th, we encourage our readers to visit United Hollywood instead for frequent updates about the strike.

In solidarity,

Daemon’s TV
Ducky Does TV
Gabby Babble
Give Me My Remote
Glowy Box
I am a TV Junkie
Mikey Likes TV
Pass the Remote
The Pie Maker
Ramblings of a TV Whore
Seriously? OMG! WTF?
Silly Pipe Dreams
Tapeworthy
Televisionary
TiFaux
The TV Addict

For those who were worried…

Glenn Close will continue to be on Damages — that show you know you’d like if only you had a mind to ever watch FX — for another two seasons.

Rejoice.

Tonight on the TiFaux: More Adam Monroe Please

An abbreviated line-up. Busy busy busy!

Looks like it’s going to be a flashback episode of Heroes, which I know some people think is happening too late in the season, but I’m still curious what happened — even if it means delaying my Adam Monroe questions for another week. Chuck is hanging on to the list by a tiny, tiny thread. Make me care, Chuck. Make me care. And How I Met Your Mother — please allow me to stop hating Lily and Marshall. I’m begging you. Let’s just never speak of their 18% mortgage ever again, okay?

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming: Billy Crystal gets the Kennedy Center Mark Twain award, whatever that is, on PBS tonight. Also, Heather spoke convincingly about the merits of Darkon, on IFC at 9:00.

Laid-off key grip from The Office describes the impact of strike

A key grip on The Office sent this sobering e-mail to the LA Times about the impact of the WGA strike on “below the line” employees.

The e-mail reads, in part:

“I have been in the motion picture business for 33 years and have survived three major strikes. None of which have been by any of the below the line unions. During the 1988 WGA strike many of my friends lost their homes, cars and even spouses. Many actors are publicly backing the writers, some have even said that they would find a way to help pay bills for the striking writers. When the networks run out of new shows and they air repeats the writers will be paid residuals. The lowest paid writer in television makes roughly twice the salary than the below the line crewmember makes. Everyone should be paid their fair share, but does it have to be at the expense of the other 90% of the crewmembers. Nobody ever recoups from a strike, lost wages are just that, lost. “We all know that the strike will be resolved. Eventually both sides will return to the bargaining table and make a deal. The only uncertainty is how many of our houses, livelihoods, college educations and retirement funds will pay for it.”

Project Runway: Season four preview part one

I can’t believe it. We’ve (read I’ve) been so caught up in fretting about the writers’ strike that I’ve neglected the fact that Project Runway debuts on Wednesday night!

Seriously, guys, where are my damn priorities?

That said, let’s take a look at the players for season four. I don’t have any sort of inside, blogger scoop on these folks, but I think it’ll be good to get to know them before we see the season premiere — just so’s we know who we’re dealing with.

It’ll be just good old fashioned knee-jerk judgments based on photos, bios and cursory Web searches. Of course, if the internet is good for anything, it’s good for posting ill-researched opinions for all the world to see.

So here’s part one. Digest it. Contemplate it. Then, before you know it, we’ll be back with the rest.
