That va-jay-jay article is actually the worst thing I’ve read in a month, especially because of these quotes:

    1) “The reduplication in ‘jay-jay’ is childlike, he said, like ‘pee pee or doo doo,’ and that ‘cleans up’ the word.”

    2) “’The reason that vajayjay has caught on, I think, is because there is a black — Southern especially — naming tradition, which is to have names like Ray Ray and Boo Boo and things like that,’ Dr. McWhorter said. ‘It sounds warm and familiar and it almost makes the vagina feel like a little cartoon character with eyes that walks around.’”

OMG, if my ladyparts ever sprout eyes and start walking around, you bet a host of “unclean” words will start coming out of my mouth.

Still, I thought it was hilarious when Jack McBrayer said “work that va-jay-jay!”

Great Wilson Cruz comment on ‘My So Called Life’:
“I think it took its audience really seriously but didn’t take itself too seriously.” How true and what a great attitude!

I agree with the last comment. Still to this day the episode where Kenneth plays manatee to Tracy’s mento is my favorite episode of 30 Rock.

I’ve actually read a couple of great books by John McWorther, but it’s true – that imagery is terrible.

And I wish the NYT article had mentioned that the term “va-jay-jay” has been around long, long before Grey’s Anatomy and 2006. I believe I first heard it in the fall of 2002 as part of MC Paul Barman’s hip-hop track, “MTV Get Off The Air, Pt. 2″ in which he threatens fellow rapper Princess Superstar with the line, “Lady, one more complaint and I’ll shove a rape whistle up the Mrs. Va-jay-jay!” Although to be fair, Mrs. Va-jay-jay definitely sounds like a cartoon character.

Why do people think pirates say “ARGH”? Pirates say “ARRR”. They only say “argh” when they’re frustrated.
