In my earlier complaint about the lack of quality programming on the Internet I neglected to mention my favorite Internet serial, Chasing Windmills. They use actual lights and tripods, which I think was the main reason I kept watching. It's produced by and stars a couple living together in Minneapolis. They posted a short video nearly every weekday for 7 months starting in September 2005. Right now they're in reruns, but as they say on NBC, if you haven't seen it, it's new to you.
There's a LOT of content. It's not all great, but many parts are. And like all good serials you start to forgive the bad in anticipation of just getting to spend more time with the characters. The first episode I watched was a monologue shot in the bathroom with the male character talking into a camcorder for his first vlog post. It's a great parody of the pointless rambling prevelant in the world of video blogging, but it's also a funny story. I thought the whole thing would be like that, but it's generally a more conventionally shot series of fiction shorts. Near the end the story got a little too melodramatic for my taste; the best parts are the quiet observations about being in a long-term relationship rather than the drama of "trouble with the baby." I particularly enjoyed an episode where they joke about making a porno video.
And just in time to fit into my YouTube Challenge, they posted a couple episodes on YouTube a few days ago.
