I fucking love the Tonys

Seriously. Maybe it's a holdover from my theatre days, maybe it's because people seem to be actually enjoying themselves (whether it's because they know no one's watching or because they're better actors is up for debate), maybe it's some sort of hormonal thing, but I almost burst into tears several times during last night's Tony broadcast.

I've only seen two of the nominated shows (the excellent revival of Sweeney Todd and the absolutely phenomenal The History Boys, see picture), but who cares? It's the Tonys. There's dancing and singing and solemn self-congratulatory speeches about The Life of the Theatre. And there were several moments of fun television.

Best Play winners!

  • TR Knight and Sara Ramirez presented an award together. Yes, that's George and Callie. Callie won one last year for Spamalot (she was awesome in it), and George has blue hair. Discuss.
  • Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) presented an award. She, like George and Callie, is kind of unbearably adorable. I am so used to thinking of her as Veronica, though, that when she appeared I became momentarily confused.
  • I don't know if everyone is aware of this, but they made a musical out of The Wedding Singer. What the hell? You really should see this shit for yourself:

  • A man accepting an award for Jersey Boys thanked his mother's womb.
  • There were some fun mistakes, like when the current Phantom wasn't in sync with the orchestra, or when Paul Rudd couldn't read his teleprompter. Theatre MAGIC, people.
  • Oh, and I almost forgot that Senator Palpatine won a Tony. I'm sure he's a very nice man, but every time he speaks I'm convinced that he's going to try to take over the universe via his army of clones.

The Tonys are the scrappy gay younger brother of the Oscars, and I feel bad for everyone who missed them.
