This Is Veronica Mars

may be the best show on TV. Name another show that could sum up its entire existence so brilliantly:

For those unitiated (which is mostly everyone), Veronica Mars is about a teenage girl detective and airs on UPN. I’ve also just explained why no one watches the show, by the way.

Last season, these things happened:

1) Veronica’s best friend Lily was murdered

2) Her dad (the local sheriff) lost his job, and relatedly…

3) V became an outcast, but not before…

4) Her boyfriend, Duncan, dumped her without an explanation…

5) And then later she was drugged and raped at a party.

6) Also her mom left town in the middle of the night and no one knows where she is.

All of this happened before the first episode even started. So V had some, you know, minor issues to work out of the course of the season. Along the way, she solves some crimes, makes a friend or two, and starts a secret relationship with Duncan’s best friend/Lily’s ex-boyfriend/possible murderer/former (current?) psychotic jackass, Logan Echolls. Logan is, of course, one of the best things about the show.

But just because I love you, V, doesn’t mean I don’t have gripes. In fact, beacuse I love you so damn much, it stands to reason that I would in fact have more gripes than with the usual show.

Granted, but Emily’s Scarier

I’m sure there will be more to say about Arrested Development as it gloriously marches towards its lamentable conclusion, and I have to forcefully stop myself from bringing up Gilmore Girls literally every second of every day, but for now, content yourself with this: Battle of the Acid-Tongued Ladies Who Lunch. Lucille Bluth may be funnier, but Emily Gilmore’s ability to create a severe psychological complex is just too, too realistic.

I am not alone

Seth Stevenson of Slate also watched the Superbowl for the ads. And wrote about it, amusingly. He agrees with me that people throwing cell phones at each other is inherently hilarious. I also liked that in that ad “theft deterrent” is seriously listed as a feature of the phone. I hope they have some sort of disclaimer that says people shouldn’t use their phones as weapons, not for people’s safety, but because you could really break your phone, and that would be a major bummer.
